1. Getting Started
Uploading a Document
- Click the "Upload PDF" button in the top header (or the center of the screen on first load).
- Select a PDF file from your device.
- The toolkit processes the file locally—no data is uploaded to any server—and generates thumbnail previews.
2. Positioning & Styling
The Right Sidebar (or bottom panel on mobile) controls the appearance and placement of page numbers. Changes update in real-time.
Positioning
Control where the number appears using Top, Right, Bottom, and Left inputs.
- Default: Bottom: 20px.
- Supported Units:
- px or pt: Points/Pixels (Standard PDF unit).
- %: Percentage of page dimension (e.g., Left: 50% for horizontal centering).
- in: Inches (e.g., 0.5in).
- cm: Centimeters (e.g., 1.5cm).
- mm: Millimeters (e.g., 10mm).
- auto: Disables that specific side constraint.
Pro Tip: To place a number in the top-right corner with 1-inch margins, set Top: 1in, Right: 1in, Bottom: auto, Left: auto.
Typography
- Font Family: Select from standard PDF fonts: Helvetica (Sans-serif), Times Roman (Serif), or Courier (Monospace).
- Size: Font size in points (e.g., 12).
- Weight: Toggle between Normal and Bold.
- Color: Use the color picker to select any custom color.
3. Numbering Logic
This is the core feature of Enscygen. You can define exactly which pages get numbered and how the counting flows.
The Include / Exclude Toggle
Located at the top of the "Numbering Logic" section:
- Include Pages (Default): The logic applies strictly to the pages you list.
- Exclude Pages: The logic applies to all pages EXCEPT the ones you list. This is perfect for skipping covers or blank separators.
Defining Ranges
The Page Range input supports complex syntax:
- Ranges: 1-5 (Pages 1 through 5).
- Single Pages: 10 (Page 10 only).
- Commas: 1-3, 5, 8-10 (Combines multiple groups).
- Last Page: N represents the end of the document (e.g., 5-N means Page 5 to the end).
Examples (10-Page Document)
Here is how different inputs affect a standard 10-page PDF:
The "Start At" Counter
This determines the number printed on the first page of your selected range.
- Example: To start numbering on Page 3 but have it say "1":
- Toggle: Include
- Range: 3-N
- Start At: 1
4. Visualization Tools
Thumbnails (Main Area)
- Displays a grid of all pages.
- Updates instantly to show the approximate position of the number.
- Hover over a card to slightly zoom in.
Timeline Palette (Bottom)
- A linear strip showing the status of every page.
- Blue Box: Page is numbered.
- White Box: Page is skipped.
- Displays the exact number assigned to that page index.
Enlarged Modal View
- Click any thumbnail to open the full-screen modal.
- Fit-to-Screen: The view automatically scales the PDF to fit your device's screen without scrolling.
- High-Res: Renders sharply on Retina/High-DPI displays.
- Navigation: Use the < and > buttons to flip through pages to verify positioning.
5. Mobile Responsiveness
Enscygen is fully optimized for mobile devices and tablets.
- Stacked Layout: In portrait mode, the preview area sits at the top, and controls sit at the bottom, allowing you to edit and see results simultaneously.
- Touch Targets: Buttons and inputs are sized for easy tapping.
- Input Zoom Prevention: Text fields are optimized to prevent auto-zooming on iOS devices.
6. Exporting
- Verify your document using the modal view.
- Click "Download Numbered" in the header.
- The app generates a new file named numbered_document.pdf with vector-based text numbers stamped onto the original pages.
7. Troubleshooting
Q: I selected "Exclude" for page 1, but the numbering starts at 2 on page 2.
A: Check your "Start At" value. If you want Page 2 to say "1", ensure "Start At" is set to 1.
Q: My "50%" position isn't perfectly centered.
A: 50% places the start of the text at the 50% mark. For precise centering, visually adjust the percentage slightly lower (e.g., 48%) or rely on visual alignment in the preview.
Q: Can I use decimals for units?
A: Yes, values like 1.5cm or 0.75in are fully supported.
